Anne Nolan's best friend, Mary, is burned to death on her engagement day. All evidence points to Anne's brother, who has the intelligence of a six-year-old. Anne refuses to believe it and decides to investigate. Mary's mother trusts her and asks her to examine the body. Anne discovers that the victim isn’t Mary but a woman who had recently given birth.
